Stand Up Paddle Boarding (SUP)
There is a new
challenge on the water for new and extreme water sport
enthusiasts. Paddle boarding is gaining popularity across
every coastline around the world. It is a sport for anyone
who loves the surf or open water and provides an incredible
full body workout. The concept is simple and the ride is stimulating.
Paddle
boarding originated from the Hawaiian Islands in the early
1960’s. The beach boys of Waikiki would take photos of
tourists learning to surf standing on long 12 foot boards
while using an outrigger paddle to maneuver through the
water. Prospectors noticed the local beach boys on their
stand up paddle boards and the sport soon caught on as a
great way to train and enjoy the water while the surf was
down. Since then paddle boarding has grown across the world
with new board designs for racing, riding waves, and leisure
paddling.
One of the
many perks paddle boarding offers is that it has become a
sport for everyone. Experienced or going out for the first
time, learning how to paddle board is easy. Boards are
generally 9 to 12 feet long and 27 to 32 inches wide. The
sturdy 4 inch thick design of the board creates a buoyant
platform able to hold a rider standing up on flat water.
By placing
your feet shoulder width apart in the middle to back end of
the board you will first need to conquer the balance of a
paddle board. Lean forward slightly with your knees bent
for more control through choppy waters. Finding your
balance can be frustrating at first so make sure you always
go out with that never give up attitude!
Once you have
found your balance it’s now time to paddle. Paddles are
made of wood, fiberglass, or carbon fiber materials and need
to come in lengths usually 6 to 10 inches above your
height. Paddle like you would in a kayak around the open
ocean or through different trails throughout the sound.
Once you have you have mastered paddling while standing
comfortably on your board you will find that you are getting
one of the best workouts you have had in years! While
paddle boarding you are utilizing almost every muscle group
in your body at once making this sport an excellent way to
stay in shape.
If you are
seeking a new thrill while riding waves, paddle boarding can
give you just that. The length and thickness of the board
will enable you to paddle into small and large waves further
out before it starts to crest. Once a wave has begun to
carry you through the water you can use your paddle as
leverage in turns or to gain speed down the face.
Whether you
are looking for a new challenge or an intense workout paddle
boarding is a great way to enjoy the water.
New models in wood, tuflite, and soft top are
