Sailing
Kitty Hawk Sports has a long history with sailing on the Outer Banks. We started as a windsurfing business in 1981 when the sport was still in its infancy. Shortly thereafter, catamaran sailing was added.
The Outer Banks are an ideal area for both windsurfing, and catamaran sailing as well as many other watersports. The good winds here are also what brought the inventors of the airplane, the Wright Brothers, here over a hundred years ago.
There are hundreds of miles of both ocean and soundside shore line that can be explored. The soundside conditions are preferred by many because of the protected, shallow and warmer waters. Many areas are only a few feet deep which makes them ideal for learning or perfecting sports like windsurfing and kiteboarding because you can stand right back up if you fall off.
Summer is preferred for learning wind sports here because the winds are more mellow and the water conditions are warmer. But the Outer Banks is renowned as being the East Coast Capitol of Windsurfing and earns that title in the spring and fall when hundreds flock here to enjoy the high wind conditions.
Kitty Hawk Watersports in Nags Head is the area’s Hobie Cat dealer and rents and instructs sailing. Check our their great sailing site and windsurfing lessons and rentals.
Be sure to come see the revolutionary new Hobie Mirage Adventure Island, a combined kayak, pedal craft, and sailboat in a trimaran configuration. Anyone can learn to sail this boat! Kitty Hawk Sports is the Outer Banks dealer.
